Chasing Light with Joseph Sassine

Joseph Sassine, Hiéroglyphes de bonheur, 2012

Nowhere is it fully clear, in Joseph Sassine’s body of work, how his works embody a quest for light. Yet, there are a few memorable moments, such as  the couple of works in which the experimentation with matter takes precedence over that of the sign, and where Sassine assembles pieces of unexpected materials, such as recycled copper, gold, and glass, and weaves them together like beads, taking advantage of light’s refraction on the textures’ reliefs to form a shimmery tapestry.

Joseph Sassine: The Experience of Light is on view until 19 November 2018 at Sursock Museum, Beirut.
